An adventure in Alaska
Ten years ago there was a student at Harvard University, called Sam Hawking. He was going to travel to Alaska with his father, John Hawking. His mother was dead; she had died when Sam was 2 years old. Sam and his father were rock climbers and Sam’s grandfather, a brave man called Tom Hawking was one, too. He died in a mountain looking for a treasure. He told about it to his son and his only grandson, Sam. The boy had wanted to go on this expedition all his life, it was his dream.
They only had a small problem, according to his grandfather; the treasure was in Mount McKinley, the highest mountain of the Alaska Range!!! But they were not lost at all; Tom had given John a map before he died. It was a strange map but they knew that with time they would learn to read it.
In the journey, they met a man called Bruce who was going to climb the same mountain with the difference that he didn’t know anything about a hidden treasure. At first, they were not planning to tell him about it but some hours later they became very good friends and John thought that maybe he would be helpful and he told him about the treasure. Sam smiled but he didn’t agree with what his father had done, he didn’t trust him very much.
When they arrived in the airport, they separated. Bruce went to a hotel and Sam and John went to a cabin that Tom had left for them before dying. They agreed to go together the next morning in search of the coveted treasure. The next day Bruce was waiting with a carriage pulled by polar wolves. He had rented them since the first part of the mountain had a path for moving. This time who was not too happy with the idea was John who preferred to live the adventure without the aid of anything.
They advanced with the carriage all morning until there was no more way to follow. From that moment onwards they began to escalate until night fell. John, who was the leader of the group, decided it was best to rest and continue in the morning. The next morning, they climbed to where the map indicated but arrived there too fast and they could not believe it was there where the treasure was. It was a small place with nothing to explore. All they had was a well that sure would die falling there. Suddenly Sam shouted. In the snow he found a paper with some kind of writing, the problem was that it was not written in English but in Spanish. None of them knew Spanish but Bruce had a plan, not a plan to help their friends, but a plan to betray them.
He pushed Sam and his father down the well and went to look for someone who could translate the message to then return for the treasure. But things did not go as expected. Sam and John fell down in a lake and they swam up. When they arrived they found the hidden treasure in front of them. There were a lot of gold coins and very many objects made of the same metal. There were many diamonds and other gemstones. They could not believe they were rich, richer than anyone in the world. The exit was in front of them, where did Tom die? John turned around and saw the lake. Now he understood everything. Tom did not know how to swim and therefore was dead at the bottom of the lake. But it was sad because he had completed the task that his father had given him, he had found the treasure.
The next day two tourists found Bruce dead. He had fallen down the mountain while he was coming back. Just out of curiosity, Sam and John went to find out what the message said. A Spanish man who was vacationing there told them that it said: close your eyes and trust.

The Time Machine
My days were often the same: going to school, playing the guitar, doing homework. I was very comfortable with that routine, but one day something incredible and marvelous happened that changed my life forever.
It was a regular day. I was walking back home thinking about all the things I had to do, when suddenly I remembered that the next day I had to bring to school something that I liked or that interested me to talk about it, and I couldn’t think of anything.
When I got home, I looked for something interesting to present, but I didn´t have anything in my room. So I looked into the other rooms with the same result. Disappointed, I went into the attic and between lots of boxes I found an old, dirty bicycle. I took it out and showed it to my parents.
“It´s from your granddad” said Father “Where did you find it?”
“I found it in the attic between some boxes” I answered quickly.
“Your granddad rode it to deliver newspapers when he was five years older than you are now” he explained.
“Can I take it to my class to talk about it?” I asked happily.
“In this conditions? I don´t think so” said dad.” Let me clean it and fix it so it will look as good as new”
After four hours, the job was done. The bicycle was in perfect conditions to be presented in front of a class
“Thanks a lot, dad”. I said “Now I have something to show at school.”
“I´m going to try it” I decided. “When I’m back I’ll tell you if it works well or not.” I told him.
The first five blocks, I rode that bike without any problems. But when I took a descending slope and accelerated, a beam of light came out from the wheel and I closed my eyes.
When it stopped, I opened them slowly; the first thing I saw was a beautiful park with a lot of young kids playing races with flying toy cars. The bike had taken me twenty years into the future.
“Awesome! This bicycle is a time machine!” I exclaimed. “I´ll take a look at the city and I’ll try to find myself”
I cycled around the City Centre looking at the modern buildings and how they were made in five seconds and with no people working on them. I also looked at the people’s clothes, made of brilliant colors.
I found my street and when I´ve arrived I saw a huge man with a white suit coming out of my house. When he got to the street he saw me and got astonished.
“What´s your name?” he asked me.
“My name is Jonathan” I answered calmly.
“Are you coming from the past?” he asked.
“Yes, but how do you know that I’m coming from the past?” I asked him interested.
“I know that because I’m you.” he said.
“Amazing!” I exclaimed “I found myself in the future too.”
“Yes, but you must go back to the past because your father, or better say, our father awaits you to tell him how the bicycle works” he told me.
“If I tell father that I traveled into the future, will he believe me?” I asked
“Maybe” he said “But you´ll never know if you don´t try.”
“O.K.; I’ll go back but I have two questions.” I said. “Am I going to marry my girlfriend, Susan? And How can I go back in time?”
“First, you´ll know that in your future, I don´t want to ruin the surprise, and second, you´ll go back in time pedaling backwards.” He said.
I started pedaling backwards after saying goodbye to my future. The same light appeared and I couldn`t keep my eyes open, like the first time. When I opened them I was in front of my house in the present time. I went in and told Father the story and, surprisingly, he believed me. Then I went to my room to rest after that great adventure and to think what was going to happen to me in the future.
The next day, I was happy but worried. I couldn’t decide if it was good to tell the whole story in my presentation at school. Finally, I decided I would do it.
When my turn to speak came, I took the bike and put it next to the teacher’s desk. Then I started to tell my story, and everybody believed me! “It’s very strange” I thought, but it is also very nice that they do not take me for a liar!
Now my life is different and exciting, thanks to the bike. When I come back from school, I always go for a ride on my magic bike.

The scream in the house
It was a rainy Sunday when I received the news. It was my birthday and I had to
go to a strange place very far from my house. I didn’t know why my parents and I
were in the car going to this scary house. My parents only told me that we had to arrive at a specific place because of my father’s job.
I was very sad because I had been waiting for my birthday for a long time, and when the special day arrived my parents forgot about it. I thought that they were probably going to say or give me something when we arrived at the mysterious mansion. But that didn’t happen.
After four hours of travelling we arrived. There were two houses. One was very small and the other one was enormous. My father told me that I would have fun in the big house and that my mother and he were going to a meeting in the small one.
I didn’t want to go, but I didn’t complain. I understood that my father had to work so I went to the house like my father suggested. I opened the door and walked inside. Suddenly, with a loud noise the door slammed. Then the lights were cut off and that scared me. I was very nervous so I started to shout. At that moment the story of the death of my friend Paul’s mother came to my mind. I was in the middle of the darkness asking for help.
Then I heard a loud scream. I realised that it was a woman and that the noise came from the kitchen of the mansion, where I could see some light. I went there and I saw a kind of monster but I couldn’t see it well. I don’t know why, but that made me want to go in. There I saw it, it was an ugly monster. It walked to me, and when I thought that it was going to kill me I realised that it was my father in a costume.
All my friends came out the darkness and when my mother turned on the lights I saw that it was a birthday party for me. My friend Paul had organised the party and the scary situation, but I didn’t get angry. Now I am dancing happily at the greatest party I’ve ever had.

Diary of a Lieutenant
I looked down at my feet. For the first time in years, I let tears out of my eyes, hoping that my pain could get off with them as well. But, anyway, I knew I wouldn´t forget it so easily. And deep inside of me, I didn´t want to forget. How could I let myself forget it? How could I let it slip out of my memory like it had never happened? I couldn’t. It was unfair. After all he had done for me…
“In recognition of your courage, bravery and honor; on behalf of your country I give you this medal in deep gratitude for your success in battle”. I couldn’t get those words out of my head. Mostly, because I knew it was a lie.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, I can’t decide), I was the only person who knew it. While we were on that dirty lockup in that dirty village, while the other soldiers, totally hopeless about our situation, were having some rest for the next exhausting hard labor day, Mike told me his idea of how we could get out of that hideous cage.
He thought that, with the death of the captain, being me the next person on the hierarchy line, the group would accept better to be given orders by me. I told him it was unfair, but he wouldn’t listen.
Back to the cage, what he told me was not that bad. We could use a walkie-talkie that Harry carried with him to communicate with the other group, (that, by the way, might be dead by now), some branches and a cable that was on the floor of the cage to build a transmitter and send some signals to base. With a bit of luck, if they understood, they could deduce our position and send a rescue team. It seemed simple, but it was far to be like that.
According to my calculations, we had no more than two hours before the guard came to take us out. We had a half an hour delay building the device and when we finally sent our signals, we had no answer. When we were trying to send it again, the guard surprisingly came down to the basement and saw us. He immediately opened the cage, but I didn’t waste the opportunity. I punched him until he fainted (and maybe a little bit more) and we could get out of that bloody hut.
The signals we sent to base meant the coordinates of a wasteland a mile away from there. We calculated that reinforcements would arrive in half an hour, so we’d better get to walk. When we were finally there, we all whispered as we saw the helicopter rounding the area.
But while it was localizing us and getting down, enemy was coming closer and some shooting could be heard. Suddenly, Harry got hurt and some of us got to cover him while Mike and the others defended the area.
The helicopter finally landed. We were running towards it when something stopped me. Mike was on the ground, barely moving his head to watch us and ask for help. So, I immediately ran to him, but in the way, a bullet hit me on my knee and I fell, too. I could feel some hands taking me back to the helicopter; while Mike shouted desperately for help and I couldn’t do anything but shout his name until I fainted.
That was the image in my head while I looked at the medal.
“In recognition of your courage, bravery and honor…” What a lie.
I was supposed to lead the group, and the only thing I did was get nervous while the person who was supposed to be following my orders, was thinking about a solution. I let him defend the position, knowing that he was no better at shooting than me, while I did nothing, watching how Harry was healed, knowing that Mike was far better doctor than me or anybody else. I had to be the one who died and Mike who lived to get a medal of honor.
I couldn’t resist any more. With a scream that I would never thought that I could emit, I threw the medal to the river, where nobody could find it. If it wasn’t Mike´s, then nobody else deserved to have it.
Nobody else.

The Elements
A long time ago, in the middle ages, a great time of warriors and epic battles, there was a city, Olympia. This town was lead by a great man, Edward, who was brave and intelligent, and he had a son, Yami, who was fascinated by magic. But under this light, the good thing, there was dark, where terrible people lived, ruled by a dark magician. They wanted Olympia for themselves.
One day, these dark men took over Olympia by taking the king prisoner. Their leader, the dark magician, occupied the throne and sent some people to capture Yami, the heir. When they found him, Yami tried to run away, but they were faster than him, he was going to be captured and probably killed, but suddenly… a powerful wizard appeared and rescued Yami .Then he escaped outside the city, to the resistance town.
Yami was desperate, he didn’t know what to do, Dark was so powerful. He thought that if he became a magician, he could beat dark and claim the throne. So he met the magician who had saved him and he started training. The magician, named Jack, explained to Yami that all the spells are about 5 elements: fire, water, earth, air and lightning. All these elements are stronger and weaker than others. Every man was born with one element and then, when they had trained for a long time, they could get their second element, like him, who could control Earth and Fire. But some people, can be born with two elements, and can become the most powerful magicians. After the explanation, Yami started to look for his own element, and he discovered it, he had the element of Air. He was very happy. Jack told Yami that the best way to control the air was to try to cut a paper only with no hands, to control the air and make it sharp like the tip of a sword. So Yami started training several hours until he did it, he could cut the paper. The next stage was to launch a wave of sharp air to a tree, and cut it down. This was very difficult, but if he could do that, he could completely control the element, and maybe, he could find another one. Two days later he did it, he was very exhausted, he cut the tree and immediately he fell down. When he woke up he felt like a new person, full of power, and something else… the fire element! He was ready to learn spells. But he wouldn’t need Jack anymore, because he had to make the spells with his imagination. Yami was very intelligent and creative and he rapidly made lots of spells, but he invented one that was one of the most powerful in the world, because he combined the air and fire together. He was ready.
His next problem was to prepare the battle, so he gathered the best warriors of the resistance, and they made the best armors and weapons they could. They were ready to fight. He and his troops went all together to Olympia, they were unstoppable. The Dark had many soldiers, but the Light was fighting for their people so they were stronger. Suddenly, the dark magician appeared and beat most of the light soldiers. He was up in a mountain throwing thunders with his lightning element, and the soldiers near him were killed by his dangerous force. Yami didn’t know what to do, he was just a boy, but he remembered his best spell, and he knew he couldn’t lose. He used all his power to throw an amazing fireball, and then he used his air element to expand the fireball and divide it in one thousand fire balls, his best spell, the Rain of Fire. The black magician couldn’t believe it, there was no escape, he was dead.
The light won! Olympia was not controlled by the dark any more. But something was missing… Edward, Yami’s father! Yami searched in the entire town, inside each building. He didn’t find him, until he saw him unconscious lying on the street. He had escaped from the dark but, unfortunately, he had fainted. Yami took him safely to his castle and called the best doctors in Olympia, they told Yami that he was only exhausted and that he had to rest some time. The next day, Edward woke up with a smile in his face, because Yami was next to him. Finally, they were all together.
Edward took the throne again and Yami became the best wizard in Olympia. The people reconstructed the destroyed buildings and they lived in peace again. They all knew that the dark would never defeat the light, no matter how much time passed, the Light would always win.
