Another Boring Summer Day
It’s nearly mid-day and Jack is still lying on his bed. How long has he been lying there, awake? It doesn’t matter. He thinks he should get up, but weariness is a difficult rival. He finally gets it. Kind of staggering, he gets to the bathroom and looks at himself in the mirror. Should he shave off? Maybe later, maybe tomorrow.
Slowly, he walks towards the kitchen. He opens the fridge and grabs a beer. As he walks to the couch, he passes through the window and sees some kids playing. He stops to stare at them, how they laugh, how happy they are, but before he realises, he is already sitting on the couch. He grasps the remote control and turns the TV on. Zapping through the channels, he finds nothing interesting to watch. Jack opens his beer and starts to drink it sip by sip while he continues changing the channels. Suddenly, something worth watching: a football match between Hull City and the Blackburn Rovers.
When the match is ending, Jack realises he hasn’t eaten anything yet, so, fighting the sluggishness, he goes to the kitchen, makes two sandwiches and gets straight back to the couch and eats his lunch in two minutes. Now what? He hasn’t checked the mailbox yet. The correspondence can wait. Maybe another beer? Ok, back to the fridge. He opens the door and feels the refreshing air coming out of that big white door. He envies the beers. He has to be in his house suffering the hot weather and the beers are just there, cooling themselves. What is he thinking of? Is the heat driving him crazy?
He grabs the can and closes the door. Moving towards the living-room again, he looks at the clock. God! Two o’clock in the afternoon, seven more hours of this borring summer day! Jack sits again in front of the TV and starts swapping the channels. Although he continues for four hours, he only finds watching the music channel entertaining.
Six o’clock now. Is it worth going out to the heat just to check the mailbox? Well, it’s better than nothing. Jack walks to the door and hesitates for a couple of seconds, but finally he opens it. The heat is unbearable. Now in front of the mailbox, he checks if there is any new mail. Nothing. Blaming no one, he gets back into his house and directly to the sofa.
Jack is so bored that he doesn’t even have the desire to look at the clock, but as he sees that there is dark outside, he thinks that it’s time to go to bed. What’s the problem if he doesn’t have a shower today? He did nothing, so there’s no problem. He brushes his teeth and goes to sleep, hoping that the next summer day won´t be like all the others: boring.
