Crucial match
I wanted to do my best, but much more than that I wanted my team to win. It was the last football game of the season, and if we won that game, we would be the champions. As we ran onto the pitch, I couldn’t feel more nervous. The crowd supported us, but the opposite team also looked strong. It wasn’t going to be easy.
The game started. I got the ball and raced towards the goal. ‘Go on!’ shouted the crowd, but my kick ended up straight into the hands of the goalkeeper. ‘Never mind,’ yelled my team mate Francis. ‘Good try’ said Joey, but at halftime the score was still 0-0.
When the second half started, it was pouring with rain. Our chance to win the championship was slowly slipping away. We hardly tried to get the ball through the opponent’s defences, but time after time they managed to stop us, they seemed invincible. Now there were two minutes left. Suddenly I had the ball; I passed it to Joey, who passed it on to Francis, who hit it straight into the goal area. The crowd went crazy, but we still had one minute left. My team was so relieved that we stopped taking care of our own defence. That was the biggest mistake we had ever made. They scored. The score was now 1-1. We were into extra time.
The first extra time began. Chandler got the ball and passed it on to Francis, hard kick to the goal…and again the goalkeeper caught it. On an offensive from our opponents, we turned them down. Time after time this situation repeated all along the first extra time. But at the second extra time, the other team was so angry that we decided to attack that weak point they had, their temperament.
When the referee blew his whistle, we started to ‘’play funny’’, as we called the strategy of playing passing the ball continuously to each other, making some risked tricks, making the other team get more and more angry and anxious. I was inside their goal zone, doing a trick that upset the other team and forced them to commit a foul against me. It was our chance, 1 minute was left, and I kicked the penalty we were given by the referee. I kicked the ball, and watched how the goalkeeper hit it, not letting the ball get inside the goal, but Francis was fast and hit the ball so hard, that the ball broke the net, and that was the goal we deserved. The final whistle was blown, and we were the champions. The final score was 2-1. We were on the top for several weeks.
